Self-harm means hurting or injuring yourself on purpose.

What is self-harm?

Self-harm means hurting or injuring yourself on purpose. 

This can include:

  • Over-dosing
  • Hitting, cutting or burning yourself
  • Pulling your own hair
  • Picking your own skin
  • Taking illegal drugs or excessive amounts of alcohol.

Self-harm can affect anyone.  Some young people use self-harm to cope with difficult thoughts or feelings, but there are lots of reasons why people start to do this.  There is support  available that can help you find ways to cope.
