Equality & disability

The Safeguarding Board for Northern Ireland (SBNI) has developed equality and disability action plans for 2023-28 and is fully committed to equal opportunities.

This section focuses on our responsibilities as a public body in Northern Ireland as the SBNI needs to comply with equality and disability legislation, namely Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998 and Disability Discrimination (Northern Ireland) Order 2006.  We have to consider how to promote equality of opportunity in relation to the following nine equality categories:

  • religious belief;
  • sexual orientation
  • political opinion
  • gender
  • racial group
  • disability (those with a disability and those without)
  • age
  • dependency (those with dependents and those without)
  • marital status.

Both pieces of legislation require us to develop an Equality Action Plan and a Disability Action Plan.  We consulted on our Plans for 13 weeks between April and July 2023.
