New Independent Chair

The Safeguarding Board for Northern Ireland (SBNI) is delighted to welcome Mr Gerard (Gerry) Guckian MBE as its new Independent Chair.

Health Minister Mike Nesbitt has announced Mr Guckian's appointment, which commenced on 3 July 2026 and will run until a date no later than 2 July 2030.

Mr Guckian brings a wealth of leadership experience and will play a key role in supporting the Board's ongoing commitment to working collaboratively across agencies to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people in Northern Ireland.

Everyone at SBNI looks forward to working with Gerry as the Board continues to strengthen partnerships and drive improvements in safeguarding practice.

This appointment has been made in accordance with the Code of Practice issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland.
